BALANGA CITY, Bataan -- A driver died while his two helpers were seriously injured when their trailer truck, which was loaded with a road grader, fell off a bridge here early Wednesday.
Police identified the fatality as Cristobal Aquino, 37, and the injured as Mario Mendoza, 43, and Mark Vincent Carreon, 37. They were all rushed to the Bataan General Hospital in Balanga City where the driver died while being treated.
Villagers said that at about 5 a.m., they heard a loud and continuous honking of horn as the truck was going down the zigzag road in Barangay Cabog-Cabog, this city.
Instead of traversing the left lane, the trailer truck turned right and crashed into the railings of the bridge before plummeting down the river.
The front portion of the truck was a total wreck while the road grader slipped from the truck and fell on its side beneath the bridge.
A resident, Ricky Moral, said the driver jumped off the truck before it fell down the bridge while the two helpers remained in the vehicle. He said the victims suffered broken bones.
“Pagliko diyan, hindi na nakabig, kaya tuloy-tuloy sila diyan (As the truck made a turn, the driver was not able to control the steering wheel, thus they fell down),” Moral said while pointing to the foot of the bridge in the zigzag road and the river below.
He said villagers noticed the truck running fast, apparently due to the failure of its brakes.
Police said investigation is ongoing. (PNA)
