1,312 LA UNION FARMERS NOW LANDOWNERS
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, La Union—A total of 1,312 farmers from the province of La Union are now new landowners after receiving yesterday their certificates of land ownership award (CLOA) from the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR).
“I am so overwhelmed with happiness. I waited more than 10 years for this,” said Ernesto Duclayan, 56, a rice and vegetable from San Fernando, La Union.
“Now, I can finally earn more for my family,” Duclayan added.
The agrarian reform beneficiaries hail from the municipalities of Aringay, Bagulin, Bangar, Burgos, Caba Naguilian, San Gabriel, Santol, Sudipen and Sto. Tomas and La Union’s component city of San Fernando.
Agrarian Reform Secretary John R. Castriciones led the distribution of CLOAs covering 757 hectares of agricultural land at the Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University.
The DAR chief told farmers during the ceremony that their CLOAs signify their “freedom from the bondage of tenancy.”
“Now that you own the land, be responsible. Make it productive and progressive. We at the DAR will provide you with support services to help you achieve this,” he added.
As a display of good faith of this promise and the government’s belief that the farmers are “the true heroes of the country,” Castriciones also turned over a cattle project to nine farmer-members of the Sta. Cecilia Producers Cooperative of Aringay, La Union.news national 1 pix 2 february 28 2019
Under the DAR’s sustainable livelihood program, the cattle project was given to help these nine farmers cope with the destruction caused by the onslaught of Typhoon Ompong in 2018.
“Typhoon Ompong destroyed my crops. This cattle project from DAR will help me in my farming chores,” said rice and corn farmer Robinson Dulay.
At the same event, Castriciones also officiated the oath-taking of 576 farmers who recently completed the training to become a member of the Barangay Agrarian Reform Committee (BARC).
The BARC helps in the mediation, conciliation, and arbitration of agrarian conflicts and issues to assist the DAR in the effective implementation of plans and programs of the agrarian reform program.
