ZAMBOANGA CITY -- A man who stabbed dead his neighbor perished while a fireman was injured in a fire that destroyed some PHP1.3 million worth of properties here, officials said Monday.
Senior Insp. Shellamie Chang, Zamboanga City Police Office (ZCPO) information officer, said the incident occurred around 10 a.m. Sunday in Barangay San Jose Gusu, west of this city.
Chang identified the fatalities as Rico Vidal, 36, who was charred to death, and Isabelito Maningo, 51, who was earlier stabbed dead by Vidal.
Wounded was Fire Officer 2 (FO2) Ryan Batayen of the Zamboanga City Fire District (ZCFD).
Chang said the investigation showed the Vidal stabbed dead Maningo and “immediately ran inside his house and started burning the wall by using a lighter”.
Chang said Vidal allegedly stabbed Maningo after the victim paid a visit to Jermalyn, the suspect’s sister.
Supt. Jhufel Brañanola, ZFCD fire marshal, said the fire rapidly spread and engulfed the nearby houses, mostly made of semi-concrete materials.
Brañanola said Vidal perished as he was trapped inside the burning house.
Brañanola said that Batayen sustained laceration on his right knee when hit by a galvanized iron sheet that fell while conducting rescue operation.
At least 15 houses were razed in the fire that reached third alarm status and lasted for more than one hour. (PNA)
