COTABATO CITY – Three public elementary schools in Maguindanao were flooded following torrential downpour affecting the province and region these past few days.

Affected schools are the Barurao Elementary School, Sambulawan Elementary School, and Pagatin Elementary School.

According to a report submitted by the school principals of the affected schools, flooding has been a chronic issue. Some teachers even report that even though the rain occurs in the surrounding provinces of North Cotabato, South Cotabao, and Sultan Kudarat and not in Maguindanao, flooding still occurs.

Despite water reaching knee-level heights, teachers and students continue to hold classes.

“Somehow we are used to [the flooding], but we expect the regional or provincial government to do something [about this],” one school teacher said, who requested to use a pseudonym during the phone interview with Philippine News Agency.

Maguindanao 1st Division Schools’ Superintendent, Alibai Benito Aliuden said that some classes were suspended and makeup classes may be held for the students.
