AFP PROPOSES ONE-YEAR MARTIAL LAW EXTENSION IN MINDANAO
Claiming that the presence of terrorists in Mindanao still prevails the Armed Forces of the Philippines propose another one-year extension of Martial law in the island. Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana expressed his full support for the AFP.
The extension of martial law in Mindanao, Lorenzana said, is aimed at completely eradicating terrorist elements in Mindanao.
Over an interview with CNN Philippines' The Source. Secretary Lorenzana explained that there are still some terrorists lurking particularly the Maute Group which he believes is small in numbers but poses threat and are difficult to look for since the terrorist group are hiding in Central Mindanao.
Lorenzana believes that this group is allegedly being cuddled by other terrorist group such as the BIFF and the presence of the ASG in Jolo and Basilan still remain a big threat.
"Second is, the BOL (Bangsamoro Organic Law) plebiscite will occur (on) January (21) and I think we should be there also to protect the plebiscite. And then there's this mid-term elections," the defense chief added.
Lorenzana clarified that he has yet to receive the formal recommendation from AFP Chief-of-Staff Gen. Carlito Galvez Jr. but noted that he was verbally informed by the latter of the plan.
