ROXAS CITY, Capiz – Delegates from the province of Aklan to the Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association (WVRAA) Meet 2019 earned praise from the Roxas City government for sharing food to the victims of a fire that gutted a residential area at Luna Novicio Extension street here last Feb 13, 2019.
In his message during the opening ceremony of the WVRAA meet at the Villareal Stadium on Feb. 17, City Councilor Cesar Yap Jr. said the fire left 47 residents homeless.
"At a nearby Banica Elementary School where a delegation was hosted, the delegates did not waste time in cooking their dinner ration for that night and offered them to the fire victims. And those people are the delegates from the Aklan province. “Abu abugidrongakongpasaeamatsaatongmgaigbataagmga amigo ngaidto pa naghalinsaprobinsiya it Akean (My big thanks to all my relatives, friends who came from the province of Aklan)!” Yap said.
The gesture of compassion proves that WVRAA is not only a sports event but affirms the truism that sports changes lives and tightens the unity of a territory, Yap added.
Arson investigation indicated that the fire occurred at around 3:30 p.m. at the house of Teresita Dorado, which was made of light materials.
The fire easily spread to other houses which were also made of light materials.
According to Punong Barangay Martin Antonio Pimentel, an unattended stove might be the cause of the blaze.
Combined efforts of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), the residents, and the Capiz Citizens Action Group(Cacag) volunteer brigades were not enough to save the 33 houses.
Pimentel appealed to the public to extend help and assistance to the fire victims who are temporarily staying with their relatives, the barangay hall and Banica Elementary School.
Meanwhile, the BFP investigator has placed the total damages at P1 million. But the estimated damages could be increased depending on the assessment of the affected residents.
