BACOLOD CITY — A Bacolod City policeman was gunned down by unidentified motorcycle-riding assailants near his home in Barangay Singcang-Airport while leaving for work Saturday morning.
The fatality was identified as Senior Police Officer 4 Oscar Exaltado, deputy chief of Police Station 6.
The gunmen left Exaltado, clad in his uniform and wearing a helmet, fallen beside his motorcycle in front of JR Torres Elementary School.
Senior Insp. Elmer Bonilla, Police Station 6 chief, said in a radio interview Exaltado was about to report for duty when he was shot.
While he was leaving home, a “spotter” was apparently watching him, Bonilla said.
He added that when police stations were initially alerted about the shooting incident, they did not know that their own colleague was the victim.
Bonilla, who described Exaltado as hardworking and who “arrives early at the station,” said he was shocked when he learned that it was his deputy who was gunned down.
“Since I stayed up late for inspection last night, I had planned to call him to take over in the accounting of station personnel,” he added.
Bonilla said that Exaltado, who was in his early 50s, had not mentioned anything about a threat to his life, but had told him he would work for his promotion this coming June and then apply for optional retirement.
Based on his assessment, Bonilla said bullets shells of two different firearms were found in the scene of the crime.
The policeman could have been shot in close range, having multiple gunshot wounds on his head, he added. (PNA)
