MALAYBALAY CITY – An Indigenous Peoples (IP) community living at the foot of Mt. Kitanglad Range Natural Park (MKRNP) in this city has received PHP20 million worth of housing grants from the National Housing Authority (NHA).
This was according to Bae Bede Blaise Omao-Maghilum, an official of the Daraghuyan Bukidnon Tribal Community whose members live in a declared ancestral domain in Barangay Dalwangan here.
During the Provincial Council regular session Tuesday, Maghilum told provincial legislators that the grant consists of 100 housing units for the members of Daraghuyan.
“Each unit is worth PHP200,000 and it will be constructed within a two-hectare lot inside the Ancestral Domain area of Daraghuyan,” Maghilum said.
Daraghuyan is led by Baylan Bae Inatlawan Adelina Tarino. The tribe's name means "people of the mountain".
According to Maghilum, the proposed site for the housing units covers at least 4,200 hectares. She said the city government has already committed PHP2 million for access roads and water connections for the housing project.
Maghilum was in the session to ask the Provincial Board to grant authority to Malaybalay City Mayor Ignacio Zubiri to sign a memorandum of agreement with the NHA for the IP housing project.
Maghilum said the tribe will work through "bayanihan" or voluntary communal labor as their counterpart for the project.
The housing project, she said, includes a heritage center that will house a "bangkasu" (high altar) and other cultural artifacts such as musical instruments, soil paintings, sculptures, handcrafted necklaces and bracelets, and abaca weavings.
