CAVITE CITY, Cavite -- Sangley Point in this province is among the hottest points in the country with the most dangerous heat indexes this summer, scoring a heat index of 42.7° Celsius observed at 2 p.m., the state weather bureau reported on Tuesday.

Sangley Point, located in the northern portion of the Cavite City peninsula, is surrounded by the Manila Bay.

Heat index is defined as a measure indicating the level of discomfort the average person is thought to experience as a result of the combined effects of the temperature and humidity in the air.

In the said April 9 report from Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), the maximum heat index of 51.7° Celsius was observed over Dagupan City at 2 p.m. Tuesday.

Other cities on the “dangerous heat index levels” list includes Cuyo, Palawa (46.2°C), Tuguegarao City, Cagayan -- 43.5°C, Daet, Camarines Norte -- 43.1°C, Calapan, Oriental Mindoro -- 43.1°C, Aparri, Cagayan -- 43°C, Catbalogan, Western Samar - 42.6°C, Baler, Aurora -- 42.3°C, Cotabato City -- 42.3°C, Dipolog City, Zamboanga Del Norte -- 41.4°C, Virac, Catanduanes --41.2°C, Masbate City, Masbate -- 41.1°C.

Department of Health Regional Director Eduardo C. Janairo told the PNA on Wednesday that "short or prolonged period of exposure to high temperature may lead, or cause heat-related conditions such as asthma, heat stroke, heat exhaustion, heat cramps, heat syncope (fainting), and heat rash.”

He advised the public to stay indoors or in cooler places especially from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., to drink plenty of water and use light colored clothes as preventive measures to heat-related health problems.

Janairo likewise warned the public about other summer related diseases such as measles, rabies, diarrhea, hepatitis, cholera, typhoid fever and influenza-like diseases, which are common during summer months. (PNA)
