LIBUNGAN, North Cotabato — Department of Agriculture (DA) Secretary Emmanuel Piñol on Tuesday led the turnover of five cargo trucks to the National Food Authority (NFA) here, which marked the launching of the aggressive palay procurement program of National Food Authority (NFA) in Soccsksargen (Region 12).

Piñol, in his speech, said the NFA has purchased one million bags of paddy rice in the first 15 days of the year as the agency started an aggressive procurement program involving local farmers.

He said NFA aims to buy 350,000 metric tons of paddy rice from January to June using an initial budget of PHP7 billion.

Piñol said his office is supporting the NFA since it has been transferred back to the DA, its mother agency, four months ago.

During the launching of the “2019 Procurement Program in Region 12,” Regional Director Milagros Casis of DA-12 assisted in handing over the five new hauling trucks to NFA Director Diane Silva.

The trucks will be used in hauling farmers’ produce from the field to the NFA buying station.

“The DA office will also turn over soon mechanical dryers to the NFA buying stations for free use by farmers,” Piñol said.

To encourage more farmers to sell their products to the NFA, Piñol said one bag of rice seeds will be given for free to farmers who will sell 80 bags of paddy rice to the NFA.

Piñol added that farmers’ associations and cooperatives will also get farm machinery and equipment if they deliver huge volumes of palay to NFA. (PNA)
