DILG HOLDS NCR BARANGAY SUMMIT ON PEACE AND ORDER

To encourage barangays and other stakeholders to join the fight against illegal drugs, criminality and corruption, over 4,000 barangay and local government officials in Metro Manila will converge today (January 8, 2019) to attend the Barangay Summit on Peace and Order in the National Capital Region at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City.

Department of the Interior and Local Government Eduardo M. Año says that one of the highlights of the event is the dialogue between President Rodrigo R. Duterte and the punong barangays in NCR on pressing peace and order issues, campaign against corruption, and federalism.

“Mahalaga ang papel ng mga barangay at komunidad sa kampanya ng pamahalaan laban sa droga, krimen at iba pang isyu. Kaya si Presidente mismo ang makikipagdayalogo sa ating mga kapitan para himukin silang makiisa at maging aktibo sa mga kampanyang ito,” says Año.

The DILG Chief says the Summit also aims to discuss issues concerning heavy traffic in Metro Manila, including review of barangay policies on road obstruction and traffic.

“Kailangan natin ang tulong at kooperasyon ng mga barangay para maibsan ang lumalalang traffic sa Metro Manila. Umaasa ako na magkakaroon ng magandang kasunduan tungkol dito,” he says.

Aside from the President and the DILG Secretary, also present during the event are Undersecretary Allen Capuyan, Presidential Adviser on Indigenous People’s Concern, who will talk about understanding the CPP, NPA, NDF; DILG Undersecretary Martin Diño who will speak on the duties and functions of barangay officials; Asst. Secretary Jonathan Malaya who will brief them about federalism; and an MMDA official to discuss the role of LGUs in road clearing.

Other resource speakers and their topics are Asec Ricojudge Janvier Echiverri on barangay’s role on the prevention of illegal drugs; Asec Manuel Felix on criminality; Asec Roosque Calacat on corruption; and Asec Alexander Macario on violent extremism
