Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III has assured the speedy crafting of the implementing rules and regulations (IRR) of the Expanded Maternity Leave Law, which provides additional maternity leave benefits to female workers in the private and public sectors.
“We have 90 days to craft the IRR but we don’t intend to maximize it, instead we hope to come up with it in 45 to 60 days. This is one of our priority legislations that is why we are geared up in crafting the IRR to facilitate its implementation,” Bello said.
President Rodrigo Duterte signed the Expanded Maternity Leave Act into law on February 20, 2019, granting 105 days or three months of paid maternity leave for female workers in the government and private sector regardless of the civil status or the legitimacy of her child.
Bello said the law is not only a victory for the working mothers and their families but also a victory to the labor sector in upholding the rights of women at work, as well as for the management sector as enhanced benefits result to higher productivity of the employees.
“Providing workers with enhanced paid leaves is one of the best strategies to keep them manage a healthy work-life balance, which translates to their higher productivity at work,” Bello said.
Aside from DOLE, the Civil Service Commission and Social Security System were also tasked to craft the IRR for the effective implementation of the law which applies to all female workers in the government and private sector.
Female workers can start availing the Expanded Maternity Leave 15 days after the publication of its IRR in a newspaper of general circulation.
