TAGBILARAN CITY — President Rodrigo Duterte officially endorsed the candidacy of former Cabinet Secretary Leoncio “Jun” Evasco for governor of Bohol province during a ceremony on Tuesday inside a military camp in Carmen town.

Duterte said he is endorsing Evasco for governor since he and the erstwhile cabinet secretary have been allies for a very long time.

“I would say na ang kandidato ko talaga dito si Jun,” said the President, who visited Camp Rajah Sikatuna in Carmen to speak before soldiers and turn over the housing project for members of the police force and the military.

The President also met with rebel returnees inside the camp in a separate ceremony.

Carmen town is about two hours away from Panglao town, where Duterte also inaugurated the new Bohol-Panglao International Airport on Tuesday.

Evasco was the president’s campaign manager back in the 2016 elections. When Duterte was still mayor of Davao City, Evasco also served as former’s chief of staff.

Evasco is also a former priest serving the towns of Dauis, Baclayon, and Catigbian in Bohol before joining the communist guerrilla movement and going underground in 1974.

Evasco’s chief opponent in the race for governor in Bohol is House Deputy Speaker Arthur Yap. (PNA)
