A PERSON who holds a cane, walks slowly, suffers pain in the joints and has wrinkles is often described as a senior citizen whose movements are limited.

But for Vice Gov. Agnes A. Magpale, these persons can still do more despite their age.

Magpale emphasized the importance of every senior citizen in a family during the Halad sa Gugma Alang Kang Lolo ug Lola in Balamban town last January 4.

Gov. Hilario P. Davide III and Magpale were in Balamban to distribute food packs and hygiene kits to a total of 808 elderly in Barangays Biasong, Aliwanay and Cansomoroy.

In her speech, the vice governor told the senior citizens that they can still do more to help their families and the community by giving advices to the younger ones and to lead them to a more fruitful life.

The Cebu Provincial Government under the administration of Davide and Magpale has been introducing initiatives that suit to the needs of every sector in the community.

For the elderly group, Magpale said the Cebu Provincial Government has been providing food packs and hygiene kits for them for the past three years.

During the distribution, the governor and the vice governor were joined by former provincial board member Grecilda Sanchez, who is a consultant for barangay affairs of the Office of the Vice Governor, and former Pinamungajan mayor Geraldine Yapha.

Davide shared to the senior citizens that his and the vice governor’s stand is good governance and to eliminate corruption in the government.

Representatives of the Mayor Rodrigo Roa Duterte Organization, as well as barangay officials and their representatives were also there to show support in the Capitol’s program.

Antonio Mag-aso, 72, one of the beneficiaries in Biasong, was thankful for the assistance given by the Capitol officials since it is hard for him to earn for a living.

Mag-aso earns money by selling copra- dried meat of the coconut from which oil is extracted.

Trinidad Bathan, 62, president of the senior citizen organization in Aliwanay, said she is glad that there is a program of the Capitol that includes the senior citizens in its yearly activities.

Bathan hopes that the “gift-giving” of the Provincial Government will continue. (cebu.gov.ph)
