EX-DAD RUNS FOR VICE MAYOR IN DAGUPAN CITY

DAGUPAN CITY -- Former city councilor Alipio Serafin “Alfie” Fernandez, son of the late Bureau of Immigration chief Alipio Fernandez Jr., substituted for his son in the vice mayoralty post under the LiFe (Lim-Fernandez) team.

Carlos Alipio Serafin Fernandez had officially withdrawn his candidacy to pave way for the inclusion of his father in next year’s elections.

Alfie filed his COC on Tuesday and was accompanied by members of his family, led by their mother Elmina as well as his wife and two children.

Also, present were Vice Mayor Brian Lim, who is running for mayor, and their candidates for city councilor.

“May disqualification ako nong panahon ng filing. (I had a disqualification during the filing of certificate of candidacy (COC). Just to buy time while I was fixing my papers, Carlo had to file first. I was a ‘permanent resident’ of the United States. I have to abandon my immigrant status to follow the law because in the COC, one condition is that a candidate must not be a permanent resident or immigrant in a foreign country,” he remarked.

“Now, I’m officially qualified,” Fernandez said, as he showed to the newsmen the document on abandonment of permanent status from the US citizenship and immigration services.

Fernandez further said this decision is an “ultimate sacrifice” considering that US immigrant status is much coveted by Filipinos.

“Mas nangingibabaw ang ating pagmamahal sa Dagupan. (My love for Dagupan overflowed) I said before I’m done with politics, that I have done my share of public service. But there is a clamor for me to come back and serve Dagupan. This decision goes beyond politics,” he added.

Meanwhile, Mayor Brian Lim thanked Fernandez’s family, noting this is the second time for LIFE (Lim-Fernandez).

In 2001, Brian’s father Benjie S. Lim (BSL) ran for mayor with Alfie’s brother, Alvin, as vice mayor.

The start of the LIFE partnership was in 1998 when the late mayor Alipio Fernandez supported the congressional bid of BSL. They later parted ways and fought in one election.

Meanwhile, Brian’s mother Celia will later file her COC for councilor as a substitute for Maximo Alexis “Beep” Tan. This will complete the line-up of LIFE.

Brian and Alfie are running against the tandem of incumbent Mayor Belen Fernandez and Liga ng mga Barangay president Bryan Kua.
