LAOAG CITY – Traditional Independence Day rites were held in front of the Provincial Capitol building on Wednesday, bringing together government officials, employees, private sectors, and citizens.

Former Vice Governor, Congressman-elect Eugenio Angelo Barba praised “heroes of yesteryears and modern-day heroes who continue to carry on the fight and sacrifice lives in order that our country’s independence will be safeguarded.”

Ilocos Norte war veterans were also at the simple ceremony, which included a 21-gun salute following the offering of white flowers at the Rizal monument.

“It is now up to the present generation to show in every deed, word, and action how are we going to protect the freedom we enjoy today,” said incoming Governor Matthew Joseph Manotoc.
