MAKATI CITY – The Makati City government has chosen Miss International 2016 Kylie Verzosa as this year’s Flores de Mayo which will take place later this afternoon.
Makati City Mayor Abigail Binay, along with Vice Mayor Monique Lagdameo and Representative Luis Campos, will lead the coronation rites for the city’s Mayflower Queen who will be escorted by her fellow actor-model Marco Gumabao.
Verzosa, the sixth Filipina to win the Miss International crown, currently works as an actress in the TV series, Los Bastardos, where her escort, Gumabao, is a co-star. Being a preschool teacher, the beauty queen is an advocate of depression and suicide awareness and prevention. She also has done print and ramp modeling.
The event will begin at 4 p.m. at the Makati City Hall Building II lobby, to be followed by the Flores de Mayo procession with a parade of flower-adorned floats carrying the Mayflower Queen as well as 53 sagala or princesses and their escorts at 5 p.m.
According to the Museum and Cultural Affairs Office, the Queen and the princesses, which came from different barangay (villages) and companies within the city, will be wearing traditional Filipino costumes representing the country’s culture and will ride aboard carriages and floats adorned with flowers for the procession.
Earlier, the local government announced road closure and traffic rerouting schemes in line with this event.
Binay said the city is keen on keeping traditional celebrations alive so that the youth get to experience and pass on this tradition. She added that it is a part of our national heritage that should be experienced not only by older generations but also by generations to come.
Flores de Mayo, or Flowers of May in English, is an annual festival in the Philippines celebrated as a devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary where devotees offer prayers, veneration and beautiful flowers to Mother Mary. It was first introduced by the Spaniards to the Filipinos in 1854.
