LA TRINIDAD RESIDENTS MUNCH ON WORLD-RECORD STRAWBERRY CAKE
LA TRINIDAD, Benguet–This valley town has again showcased the world-record giant strawberry short cake on Saturday with around 12,000 people partaking of the bounty as the highlight of the month-long strawberry festival.
The cake is a replica in size, design and taste of the one that made this town land in the Guinness world record.
“The world record giant strawberry cake measures 1.5 meters high by 1.8 meters wide by 2.5 meters long, and weighs 1.6 tons. The cake making was led by chef Eric Espadero of Valley Bread,” said Sharon Lorenzo, Valley Bread Public Relations Manager on the sidelines of the ceremonial slicing of the cake here.
Valley Bread is the biggest supplier of quality bread in Baguio and Benguet.
La Trinidad got the world record for the biggest strawberry shortcake in 2004. The cake weighed 9,622.24 kilograms and was served to more than 10,000 persons.
Lorenzo said there were 500 pans of cake that was used in coming up with the giant cake. Each cake has 32 slices.
“It took us three days to finish the preparation with 46 manpower to help Chef Eric to finish the job,” she said.
During the 2018 strawberry festival, several bakers and bakeshop owners were asked to bake a strawberry cake that resembles the taste of the original record breaking cake. Espadero’s product was selected to be the taste of this year’s featured strawberry shortcake.
The same cake design was repeatedly showcased with a smaller version following the record. It was last featured in the 2017 strawberry festival.
Based on the data provided to media by the organizers, this year’s cake was made with 600 kilos of fresh strawberries; 300 kilos sugar; 3,000 pieces of fresh large eggs; 345 kilos milk; 375 kilos of all-purpose flour; 10 kilos of baking powder; four kilos of salt; and 350 kilos of preserved strawberry.
Lorenzo said the total cost for the ingredients, including the labor, was PHP675,000.
The slicing started at 11 a.m. at the Lednicky hall in the municipal building.
During the event, the first 50 slices were given free and the succeeding slices were sold at PHP20 per slice to allow the organizers to recoup the expenses.
Earlier, La Trinidad Mayor Romeo Salda said the giant strawberry cake is a featured event to drumbeat the annual strawberry festival.
Salda said the festival aims to showcase strawberry as the valley’s One-Town-One-Product (OTOP) and to foster and rekindle ties between locals and tourists alike. (PNA)
