LTO MULLS 10-YEAR LICENSE VALIDITY
The Department of Transportation (DOTr) with the other transport-related agencies held its regular press conference on Tuesday.
During ‘Transport Talks’, they discussed the updates regarding different projects. Land Transportation Office (LTO) Assistant Secretary Edgar Galvante tackled the new law on motorcycle plates, car plate distribution, and licenses.
According to Galvante, aside from their manual machines, LTO has imported ‘IDe Robot’ which came from Germany to resolve the backlog on plate numbers.
LTO aims to release license with 10-year validity in the future to drivers without delinquencies especially on traffic violations. The agency asks the Local Government Unit (LGUs) to release the names of those with record violations in their areas. This will be the basis of a certain applicant if he or she will be qualified to have a driver’s license with 10-year validity.
Those who have a three-year license validity which will expire on October this year can renew their application as early as two months before the expiration of the current license.
LTO planned to extend the adjustment period for renewal of license into six months.
“Parang hindi naman yata wise na isyuhan pa namin sila ng plastic cards na for three years ganung magpapalit na sila into five years. Kaya gagawin naming adjustment as early as six months before pwede na sila mag-renew para immediately ‘yong kanilang papel na maaaring gulagulanit na ay mapalitan na natin ng plastic cards, (Because I don’t think it’s wise for us to issue them plastic cards that will last for three years if they’re going to change into a five-year valid card. That’s why we’re making the adjustment as early as six months before, they can already renew their papers, that may already be tattered, will be changed into plastic cards,)” said Asec. Galvante.
Currently, the agency provides five-year validity on a driver’s license. (CHAY ALDAY/LEAGUE ONLINE NEWS)
