DAVAO CITY - Mayor Inday Sara Duterte-Carpio is now looking forward to next year's international triathlon Alveo Ironman 70.3 that will be hosted gain by the city and hopes to increase tourist arrival through this event.
“I hope that they spend their money here. The important thing is that they leave their money here because in effect, it strengthens our economy,” she said.
After the unprecedented success of the inaugural race last year, more than 2,000 participants from 38 countries joined this year’s recently concluded sports event including three celebrities. Dabawenyos gave visitors a warm reception during the event.
Markus Rolli from Germany was declared the new champion after finishing the race in just three hours and 49 minutes. Craig Alexander landed in second place followed by Tim Van Berkel, Timothy James Reed and Sam Betten.
Duterte-Carpio attributed the success to the support and cooperation of the Dabawenyos, the security forces who made sure that everyone was safe, and the other Local Government Units - Panabo City, Tagum and Carmen, who collaborated with Davao City in the sports event.
She also rated the recently concluded event to "near perfect".
“From the feedback of our partner, Sunrise Events, that this is a better competition compared to last year's. And, it is difficult to level it up for the next year,” she assessed.
