NAVOTAS CITY – Some 49 children in conflict with the law (CICL) sheltered in Bahay Pag-asa completed the computer training program provided by the Navotas City government.
These children learned how to use Microsoft Word, Excel at Power Point during the Computer Outreach Learning (COOL) which lasted for two hours a day for almost a week.
In his speech, Navotas City Mayor John Rey Tiangco emphasized the importance of being a computer literate.
“Importante na meron tayong sapat na kaalaman at kakayahan sa paggamit ng computer, lalo na ngayon na umaasa tayo sa teknolohiya sa ating pang-araw-araw na buhay. Ito ang dahilan kung bakit sa pamamagitan ng COOL, tinuturuan natin ang mga bata, kahit ‘yong edad lima, pati matatandang nasa 70 na kung paano gumamit ng computer,” he said.
(It is important to have enough knowledge and ability to use computers, especially today that we rely on technology in our daily lives. That's why through COOL, we teach kids, even though they are five, as well as older ones on how to use a computer.)
Aside from COOL, they are also enrolled in the Alternative Learning System (ALS) of the Department of Education (DepEd).
Tiangco said the city council will procure additional computers for them to apply what they learned from the computer program.
“Sikapin ninyong matuto parati at mapaunlad ang sarili. Kapag tapos na kayo rito, ipagpatuloy ninyo ang inyong pag-aaral (Strive to learn and develop your skills. Once you completed the course, continue studying),” he added.
Furthermore, the city mayor encouraged CICLs to take technical-vocational course at the Navotas Training and Assessment (NAVOTAAS) Institute.
The local government will construct two more training centers that will offer courses in animation and visual graphics.
Since last year, the city, through the NavotaAs Hanapbuhay Center, has been holding livelihood skills training at Bahay Pag-asa.
CICLs were taught how to make powder and liquid detergent, as well buchi, kutsinta, brownies, maja blanca, chocolate cupcake and puto.
They are set to undergo training on dishwashing liquid and perfume making.
