BACOLOD CITY — Athletes from Negros Occidental, who won medals in the recent Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association (WVRAA) Meet 2019, received a total of PHP917,000 in cash incentives from the provincial government.
Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. led the awarding ceremony held at the Negros Occidental Multi-Purpose Activity Center in this city on Friday afternoon.
Each gold medalist received PHP1,200; silver medalist, PHP800; and bronze winner, PHP600.
Marañon once again commended the Negrense student-athletes and their coaches for their determination to win and for making the Negros Occidental delegation the over-all champion.
“We give out cash incentives to underscore the province’s gratitude to the athletes for their hard work in giving Negros Occidental honor in the field of sports,” the governor said.
During the WVRAA Meet 2019 held in Roxas City, Capiz last February 17-23, the Negros Occidental delegation won 415 gold medals, including 181 in elementary, 209 in secondary, and 25 in Demo-SPED categories.
They also brought home 379 silver medals composed of 128 from elementary, 210 from secondary, and 41 from Demo-SPED, as well as 193 bronze medals comprising 63 from elementary, 72 from secondary, and 85 from Demo-SPED.
The distribution of cash incentives to the athletes was witnessed by Provincial Sports Coordinator Angel Verdeflor, Negros Occidental Schools Division Superintendent Portia Mallorca, and Department of Education -Negros Occidental Division Sports Officer Romeo Sison.
Before they left for the regional games last month, the 534 student-athletes received PHP15.534 million in allowances from the provincial government for their training, meals, uniforms, transportation, sports supplies and other needs.
Negros Occidental re-joined the WVRAA Meet in 2018 after competing separately in 2017 under the Negros Island Region (NIR). After the NIR was abolished in August 2017, Negros Occidental again competed as another province in last year’s regional meet. (PNA)
