COTABATO CITY — The entire province of North Cotabato has been placed under a state of calamity due to the severe effect of the El Niño weather phenomenon, a top provincial official said Friday.
Vice Governor Sherlyn Macasarte-Villanueva, presiding officer of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan said the decision was reached by council members during their regular session earlier this week.
“This was upon the recommendation of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRM0),” she said.
PDRRMO records showed that the extreme weather condition has so far damaged PHP670-million worth of crops in the province’s Kidapawan City and 17 municipalities.
Severely affected are the towns of Libungan, Carmen, Aleosan, Alamada, Matalam, Pigcawayan, M’lang, Pikit, Kabacan, Antipas and Tulunan.
The provincial government has also allotted funds for cloud seeding operations to ease the effect of El Niño on thousands of farmers across the province. (PNA)
