PAL CANCELS NOV. 14-19 FLIGHTS AS CAAP UPGRADES NAVIGATION SYSTEM

MANILA -- Flag carrier Philippine Airlines (PAL) will cancel a number of its domestic and international flights from Nov. 14 to 19 in response to the government's call to reduce the number of flights while the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) works on an enhanced air navigational system.

CAAP spokesperson Eric Apolonio told the Philippine News Agency (PNA) on Wednesday that the request was addressed to all airlines operating at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).

"Flights from Nov. 15 to 20 will be affected by this request. NAIA caters to 40 flights per hour. With the reduction of flights, at least four arrival flights will be canceled per hour," he said.

Apolonio added that it is up to the airlines' discretion which flights to cancel.

He said reducing the number of flights is a measure needed for safety reasons, since the air navigational system will have a transition phase. This is the "migration from the old Manila ACC radar, which has a limited capacity, to the CNS-ATM system, which can cover the whole country," Apolonio said.

The Communications, Navigation, Surveillance/Air Traffic Management (CNS/ATM) system is expected to enhance the safety and efficiency of air traffic, airport authorities said. The system, they said, would enable a more definite aircraft identification and better airspace management.
