CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY -- The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency in Region 10 (PDEA-10) has conducted a surprise drug test on Monday to around 100 bus drivers here.
PDEA-10 Director Wilkins Villanueva said the main objective of the drug test was to determine the fitness of the drivers, who will be plying their routes during the "Undas".
While the drug tests were conducted on a voluntary basis, Villanueva said they will submit to the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) 10 the names of the bus firms, where the dissenting drivers belong.
In a separate interview, LTFRB-10 Director Aminoden Guro said they will summon the bus companies whose drivers refused the PDEA-led drug test and let them explain the action of their drivers.
Villanueva, who said the drug testing was a joint undertaking with LTFRB and the Land Transportation Office (LTO), said the move was a result of past road accidents, in which bus drivers were involved.
“So far, wala pa man pud hinuon diri sa Region 10 nga naay na-aksidente nga bus nga ang (So far, it has never happened here that the) driver tested positive. What we’re doing is preemptive,” Villanueva clarified, adding that drug testing on bus terminals was also done nationwide.
As of October 29, some 100 drivers from the Agora and Bulua bus terminals, both in Cagayan de Oro, volunteered themselves for drug testing. (PNA)
