PNP: SHABU IN ILOCOS NORTE CONTINUES TO DECLINE
LAOAG CITY -- Owing to the intensified drive against prohibited drugs, the Ilocos Norte Police Provincial Office (INPPO) has reported that the supply of shabu in the province is getting scarce.
“The supply and demand of illegal drugs in the province has been continuously declining,” Chief Insp. Randy Baoit, INPPO operations officer, said in an interview on December 14.
He attributed the decline to the non-stop buy-bust operations and arrest of suspected drug dealers and users.
From January to November this year, the INPPO reported that law enforcers arrested 150 drug personalities after conducting 245 police operations.
The latest report on the police’s illegal drug operations showed that about 121 grams of shabu and 197 grams of marijuana had been seized, along with at least 23 firearms and six explosives.
Since July 1, 2016 to Nov. 30 this year, 6,459 residents of various parts of the province voluntarily surrendered to local authorities. The figure is 1.05 percent of Ilocos Norte’s 613,659 population.
Among the most notable accomplishments of the police, in collaboration with the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), was the arrest of a village councilor identified as Ramil Padero Curammeng in Barangay Sta. Ana, Solsona, Ilocos Norte three months ago. Seized from his possession was a medium-sized transparent plastic sachet containing dried marijuana leaves.
Another joint INPPO-PDEA operation on September 4 led to the arrest of Stevenson Cudal Custodio of Barangay San Roque, Paoay town. A small plastic sachet of suspected shabu was seized from the suspect.
To date, local government units, in cooperation with other national government line agencies, continue to help out drug surrenderers through the community drug reformation program.
The PDEA reported that 520 drug-affected barangays in Ilocos Norte are almost drug-cleared. Validation is ongoing.
Local authorities said 1 gram of shabu is worth PHP8,000 to PHP10,000 while 5 grams are priced at PHP40,000 to PHP50,0000. (PNA)
