RUSSIAN FRAUDSTER NABBED IN MANILA
MANILA -- Immigration authorities arrested a 37-year-old Russian wanted for fraud in his country in Manila on Tuesday.
In a statement Wednesday, the Bureau of Immigration (BI) said Likharev Anton was apprehended by Tourist Visa Section employees after he attempted to extend his temporary visitor’s visa at the bureau’s head office in Intramuros, Manila.
A Summary Deportation Order was issued by BI Board of Commissioners in December 2018 after receiving information that he is wanted by Russian courts for large-scale crimes involving acquisition of other people’s property by means of deceit, in violation of Article 159, Part 4 of Russia's Criminal Code.
He was turned over to the BI’s Fugitive Search Unit for commitment to the detention facility in Bicutan, Taguig pending the implementation of his deportation.
In 2017, Likharev was also arrested for violating the Fisheries Code of the Philippines and a municipal ordinance when he killed a green sea turtle with a spear in Dauin, Negros Oriental.
He reportedly denied that he intentionally killed the turtle, claiming that he did not know that the area is a marine sanctuary.
Likharev arrived in the country in 2016 as a tourist and has not left since then.
With this, Commissioner Jaime Morente commended the personnel who intercepted the foreigner.
“These men deserve commendation for their vigilance, which led to the arrest of this fugitive. We will not allow fraudsters like him to hide in the Philippines, as they pose a risk to public interest,” he added. (PNA)
