TALAVERA, Nueva Ecija -- An alleged member of a notorious "basag-kotse" or car robbery gang was killed while his companion eluded arrest during a pursuit operation along a farm-to-market road in Barangay Sampaloc here Wednesday night.

Supt. Alexie Desamito, town police chief, on Thursday identified the fatality as Francisco Valenzuela, alias Kiko, a resident of Poblacion Sur, this municipality.

Desamito said the police is still trying to establish the identity of the second suspect who managed to flee on board a motorcycle.

Investigation disclosed that the suspects were caught by Leny Rose Balaguidan, 39, manager of a cosmetics selling company, in the act of hitting the window of her car, which was parked in front of their office shortly before 8 p.m., prompting the woman to scream and seek help.

“Nalito siguro yung mga suspek kaya sumakay agad sa motorsiklo, mabilis na umalis (The suspects probably got confused, that is why they immediately rode in the motorcycle and left quickly),” Desamito said. “But that was before Valenzuela fired a hand gun on the air.”

Upon receipt of the information, she said that patrolling policemen near the area readily pursued the duo until they were found in an unlit portion of the road.

Valenzuela immediately fired at approaching policemen while his companion fled, she said.

Investigators recovered from Valenzuela a .22 Magnum revolver, a black sling bag and two sachets of suspected shabu.

A check on the suspect’s records, according to Desamito, showed that Valenzuela had been detained for carnapping and theft a few years ago.

Police also recovered a CCTV footage showing Valenzuela ransacking a van in front of a restaurant in Barangay Dinarayat here late last year, she added. (PNA)
