ILOILO CITY -- A former village captain, now a village councilor, who was on the drug list of President Rodrigo Duterte, was arrested Sunday morning in a buy-bust operation in this city.
In an interview, Senior Insp. Kennith Bermejo, team leader of the Regional Drug Enforcement Unit in Western Visayas (RDEU-6), said Gemma Calzado, 53, of Barangay Kasing-Kasing, Molo, Iloilo City, is now under the custody of Molo Police Station facing charges for violation of Republic Act 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002. Joint operatives of the RDEU-6 and Molo Police Station conducted the buy-bust operation.
According to Bermejo, Calzado was arrested after she sold a sachet of suspected shabu to a police poseur buyer around 9 a.m. at an auto repair shop in the village.
“We have been monitoring her for about five months already,” Bermejo said.
He added they also recovered eight sachets of suspected shabu in her possession, with an estimated street value of PHP10,000, and PHP1,400 cash believed to be the proceeds from her illegal drug activity.
Bermejo said Calzado was listed as a "level 2 high-value target" of the Philippine National Police.
He said she is also connected to the drug group of slain suspected Western Visayas drug lord Melvin Odicta Sr.
Calzado ran for councilor in their village after she finished her three terms as village chief.
Despite that, she has been tagged by Duterte as among the narco-politicians.
She won as the number one councilor during the May 2018 local polls.
