How Cebu City LGU looks at a problem
“The greater good for the greater number of people.”
This is the battle cry of Cebu City LGU sounded off by Vice Mayor Edgardo Labella who believes that any community problem can be solved “if we work together as a team, with no political undertones.”
Labella made this unprecedented call for unity following the arrest of crime incidents in the city which were immediately solved by the local police through the help of volunteer witnesses.
The killings of some business process outsourcing (BPO) workers and the latest arrest of a big-time drug courier who was caught with illegal drugs worth almost Php40million “were just a “tip of an ice-berg” of a social menace that we should work together to get rid of it,” said Labella.
In the same breath, Cebu City councilor Dave Tumulak, who chairs the city council’s peace and order committee and at the same time the deputy mayor for police matters, said he will see to it those policemen who made the arrest of the suspects and were instrumental in solving the crime incidents be officially commended and awarded to motivate them further.
“The collaborative efforts between the city’s LGU and the local police are the need of the hour to arrest any social problem in our beloved city,” Tumulak was quoted as saying.
For her part, Cebu City Police Office head Sr. Supt. Royina Garma, the first female police chief in Cebu City, stressed “our city policemen now have an advocacy that crime solution should be done as a community effort.”
“We need to unite and stop finger-pointing, putting an end to illegal drug trade and all other crimes in the community is a challenge to all of us,” the lady chief of police said. ( Jun Basadre)
